GEMS
Australia and New Zealand have implemented mandatory energy efficiency certification systems, officially known as the ‘Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards’.Effective October 1, 2012, it replaced the previous MEPS certification system, aiming to enhance product energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by establishing minimum energy efficiency requirements.
Key points
Scope of certification: covers electronic and electrical products for household, commercial and industrial use, including air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, water heaters, LED lights, televisions, external power supplies, etc.
The purpose of certification is to improve energy efficiency, reduce operational costs and greenhouse gas emissions, while guiding consumer choices through energy efficiency labels.
Compliance requirements: The product must pass ISO 17025 laboratory testing and be registered by a local Australian company. The validity period of the certification is usually 5 years.
Other certification requirements: GEMS certification must be obtained concurrently with RCM certification (Safety and Electromagnetic Compatibility Certification) to sell in the Australian and New Zealand markets.
application procedure
Product testing: The sample is sent to an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory for testing.
Prepare documents: organize technical documents, business documents, and product labels, etc.
Register with the Australian regulator through a local Australian company, rather than choosing a single state.
Get the certificate: After approval, you will receive the GEMS certification, which typically takes about one month.
matters need attention
New LED lighting regulations: Effective March 3, 2026, LED lights must meet stricter standards, including a minimum luminous efficacy of 120 lm/W.
Exempted products: LED lights for aviation and special applications are not subject to regulatory control.
Non-compliance risks: False labeling of energy efficiency may incur a maximum fine of 1.1 million Australian dollars, requiring verification of test results and label accuracy.
Important Notice
Local agent: The applicant must be a company registered in Australia.
Compulsory certification: Products failing certification are prohibited from being sold in the Australian and New Zealand markets.
