The difference between the UN38.3 certification and the MSDS

UN38.3 is the test standard. Full name is in the United Nations for dangerous goods transportation "United Nations dangerous goods transportation test and standard manual" part 338.3, namely the requirements of lithium battery transportation, must be through height simulation, high and low temperature cycle, vibration test, impact test, 55°C short circuit, impact test, charging test, forced discharge test, to ensure the safety of lithium battery transportation. If the lithium battery is not installed with the device and each package contains more than 24 cells or 12 batteries, then pass a 1.2 m free drop test.

The UN38.3 report and the MSDS are required for lithium batteries, both by sea and by air. It should be noted that UN38. 3 needs to be tested in a designated qualified third-party testing company. MSDS can be submitted to a third party for testing or issued by the factory itself.

Usually when many people do battery testing, UN38.3 and MSDS are confused or think it is the same certification, which has a very big impact on the testing. MSDS is a chemical safety technical specification, is a document for the composition and emergency treatment of lithium battery, UN38.3 is a safety test for lithium battery. Because lithium batteries are transported by air, UN38.3 and MSDS are often required, so many people mistakenly think UN38.3 is MSDS.
